The Marché aux Puces & Vintage Paris
The Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen, at the northern edge of Paris, is the largest antique market in the world — and one of the most bewildering, most fascinating, and most rewarding places to spend a Saturday morning in France. Two thousand dealers, fifteen covered markets, and decades of accumulated expertise in furniture, art, fashion, jewellery, books, objects, and the entire material culture of French life from the 16th century to the 1980s.
To navigate it alone is to find perhaps a tenth of what it contains. To navigate it with a dealer who has been working these markets for thirty years — who knows which stalls hold the finest 18th-century furniture, which passages conceal the best vintage fashion, and which vendors will negotiate and which will not — is to find everything.
