My most treasured Bordeaux experience has nothing to do with a Premier Grand Cru. It takes place each morning at the Marché des Capucins — Bordeaux's great covered market, known to locals as the belly of the city. Arrive early. Find a seat at one of the zinc-topped bars among the market workers and the restaurateurs doing their morning rounds. Order an oyster from the Bassin d'Arcachon — opened right in front of you — and a glass of white Graves. Watch the market come alive around you.
It costs almost nothing. It is one of the great pleasures France has to offer. And it will tell you everything you need to know about Bordeaux — a city where the finest things in life are treated, quite simply, as a matter of course.
